Chapter 34: Rāvaṇa’s Conversation With Śūrpaṇakhā
Text 3.34.17
नैव देवी न गन्धर्वी न यक्षी न च किन्नरी।
नैवंरूपा मया नारी दृष्टपूर्वा महीतले॥
naiva devī na gandharvī na yakṣī na ca kinnarī
naivaṁ-rūpā mayā nārī dṛṣṭa-pūrvā mahī-tale
na eva = never; devī = a demigoddess; na gandharvī = gandharvī; na yakṣī = yakṣī; na ca kinnarī = kinnarī; na evam-rūpā = with such beauty; mayā = I have; nārī = or a woman; dṛṣṭa-pūrvā = seen; mahī-tale = on the surface of the earth.
I have never seen a demigoddess, gandharvī, yakṣī, kinnarī or a woman on the surface of the earth with such beauty.
Since the second half [of this verse] contains [the expression] “on the surface of the earth,” it is evident that [the expression] “in Svargaloka” [should be supplied] in the first half [of this verse] because demigoddesses, gandharvīs, yakṣīs and kinnarīs only live there.
