चतुर्दश सहस्राणि रक्षसां भीमकर्मणाम्।
शूराणां लब्धलक्षाणां खरचित्तानुवर्तिनाम्॥
ते त्विदानीं जनस्थाने वसमाना महाबलाः।
सङ्गताः परमायत्ता रामेण सह संयुगे।
नानाप्रहरणोपेताः खरप्रमुखराक्षसाः॥
caturdaśa sahasrāṇi rakṣasāṁ bhīma-karmaṇām
śūrāṇāṁ labdha-lakṣāṇāṁ khara-cittānuvartinām
te tv idānīṁ janasthāne vasamānā mahā-balāḥ
saṅgatāḥ paramāyattā rāmeṇa saha saṁyuge
nānā-praharaṇopetāḥ khara-pramukha-rākṣasāḥ
caturdaśa = [there were] fourteen; sahasrāṇi = thousand; rakṣasām = rākṣasas [there]; bhīma-karmaṇām = their activities were fierce; śūrāṇām = they were heroic; labdha-lakṣāṇām = and had their opportunities [to put up fights]; khara-citta-anuvartinām = obedient to the desires of Khara; te = those; tu = but; idānīm = now; janasthāne = in Janasthāna; vasamānāḥ = while living; mahā-balāḥ = greatly powerful; saṅgatāḥ = assembled; parama-āyattāḥ = they were well prepared; rāmeṇa = Rāma; saha = with; saṁyuge = in a battle; nānā-praharaṇa-upetāḥ = and equipped with various weapons; khara-pramukha-rākṣasāḥ = rākṣasas led by Khara.
[There were] fourteen thousand rākṣasas [there]. Their activities were fierce. They were heroic, obedient to the desires of Khara and had their opportunities [to put up fights]. But now while living in Janasthāna, those greatly powerful rākṣasas led by Khara assembled in a battle with Rāma.1 They were well prepared and equipped with various weapons.
