Chapter 40: Rāvaṇa Criticizes Mārīca
Text 3.40.11
सावमर्दं तु यद्वाक्यं मारीच हितमुच्यते।
नाभिनन्दति तद्राजा मानार्हो मानवर्जितम्॥
sāvamardaṁ tu yad vākyaṁ mārīca hitam ucyate
nābhinandati tad rājā mānārho māna-varjitam
sa-avamardam tu = are accompanied by insult; yat = [when] they; vākyam = words; mārīca = Mārīca; hitam = for his benefit; ucyate = spoken; na = no; abhinandati = appreciates; tat = the; rājā = king; māna-arhaḥ = honorable; māna-varjitam = and dishonor.
Mārīca, no honorable king appreciates the words spoken for his benefit [when] they are accompanied by insult and dishonor.
