Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 41: Mārīca Again Criticizes Rāvaṇa
Text 3.41.7
अमात्यैः कामवृत्तो हि राजा कापथमाश्रितः।
निग्राह्यः सर्वथा सद्भिर्न निग्राह्यो निगृह्यसे॥
amātyaiḥ kāma-vṛtto hi rājā kāpatham āśritaḥ
nigrāhyaḥ sarvathā sadbhir na nigrāhyo nigṛhyase
amātyaiḥ = ministers; kāma-vṛttaḥ hi = who acts whimsically; rājā = a king; kāpatham = of an evil path; āśritaḥ = and who has taken shelter; nigrāhyaḥ = should be restrained; sarvathā = always; sadbhiḥ = by good; na = not; nigrāhyaḥ = you are meant to be restrained; nigṛhyase = [but] you have been restrained.
A king who acts whimsically and who has taken shelter of an evil path should always be restrained by good ministers. You are meant to be restrained, [but] you haven’t been restrained!
Here Mārīca points out this duty of an assistant since it is useful [to mention this in this context]. But na nigrāhyo nigṛhyase indicates that [Rāvaṇa’s assistants] haven’t carried out their duty.
