Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 41: Mārīca Again Criticizes Rāvaṇa
Text 3.41.20

निवार्यमाणस्तु मया हितैषिणा न मृष्यसे वाक्यमिदं निशाचर।
परेतकल्पा हि गतायुषो नरा हितं न गृह्णन्ति सुहृद्भिरीरितम्॥

nivāryamāṇas tu mayā hitaiṣiṇā
na mṛṣyase vākyam idaṁ niśācara
pareta-kalpā hi gatāyuṣo narā
hitaṁ na gṛhṇanti suhṛdbhir īritam

nivāryamāṇaḥ tu = restrain you; mayā = when I; hita-eṣiṇā = your well-wisher; na mṛṣyase = you don’t tolerate; vākyam = words; idam = these; niśācara = O night-ranger; pareta-kalpāḥ = and who are about to die; hi = because; gata-āyuṣaḥ = whose lives are over; narāḥ = men; hitam = good advice; na gṛhṇanti = don’t accept; suhṛdbhiḥ = by their well-wishers; īritam = offered.

O night-ranger, you don’t tolerate these words when I, your well-wisher, restrain you because men whose lives are over and who are about to die don’t accept good advice offered by their well-wishers.1

Mārīca now sets out the logic of what he has spoken [to Rāvaṇa till now].

[1] vinayo hīndriya-jayaḥ. (Kāmandaka)

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: īṣad-asamāptau kalpah-pratyayaḥ.
