Chapter 42: Mārīca Becomes an Enchanting Deer
Text 3.42.13

एतद्रामाश्रमपदं दृश्यते कदलीवृतम्।
क्रियतां तत्सखे शीघ्रं यदर्थं वयमागताः॥

etad rāmāśrama-padaṁ dṛśyate kadalī-vṛtam
kriyatāṁ tat sakhe śīghraṁ yad-arthaṁ vayam āgatāḥ

etat = here; rāma-āśrama-padam = Rāma’s āśrama; dṛśyate = can be seen; kadalī-vṛtam = surrounded by banana trees; kriyatām = accomplish; tat = the work; sakhe = my friend; śīghram = quickly; yat-artham = for which; vayam = we; āgatāḥ = have come [here].

Rāma’s āśrama, surrounded by banana trees, can be seen here. My friend, quickly accomplish the work for which we have come [here].1

Rāvaṇa wanted to tell Mārīca, “Assume the form of a deer which will fulfill the purpose for which we have come [here].”

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhāva-dīpa: vayam iti bahu-vacanaṁ “asmadodvayoś ca” iti sambhavati. vidheya-viśeṣaṇatvāt saviśeṣaṇatva-prayukta-pratiṣedhābhāvaś ca.
