Chapter 42: Mārīca Becomes an Enchanting Deer
Text 3.42.12
अवतीर्य रथात्तस्मात्ततः काञ्चनभूषणात्।
हस्ते गृहीत्वा मारीचं रावणो वाक्यमब्रवीत्॥
avatīrya rathāt tasmāt tataḥ kāñcana-bhūṣaṇāt
haste gṛhītvā mārīcaṁ rāvaṇo vākyam abravīt
avatīrya = descending; rathāt = chariot; tasmāt = from the; tataḥ = after; kāñcana-bhūṣaṇāt = gold-ornamented; haste = by the hand; gṛhītvā = grasped; mārīcam = Mārīca; rāvaṇaḥ = Rāvaṇa; vākyam = [the following] words; abravīt = and spoke.
After descending from the gold-ornamented chariot, Rāvaṇa grasped Mārīca by the hand and spoke [the following] words.
Rāvaṇa grasped Mārīca’s hand to indicate that it was mandatory [that he carry out Rāvaṇa’s instructions].
