Chapter 42: Mārīca Becomes an Enchanting Deer
Text 3.42.15
स तु रूपं समास्थाय महदद्भुतदर्शनम्।
मणिप्रवरशृङ्गाग्रः सितासितमुखाकृतिः॥
sa tu rūpaṁ samāsthāya mahad adbhuta-darśanam
maṇi-pravara-śṛṅgāgraḥ sitāsita-mukhākṛtiḥ
saḥ tu = he; rūpam = the form [of a deer]; samāsthāya = assumed; mahat = that was great; adbhuta-darśanam = and astonishing to behold; maṇi-pravara-śṛṅga-agraḥ = the tips of its horns resembled the excellent gem sapphire; sita-asita-mukha-ākṛti ḥ = its face was partly white and partly black in appearance.
He assumed the form [of a deer] that was great and astonishing to behold. The tips of its horns resembled the excellent gem sapphire. Its face was partly white and partly black in appearance.
Sitāsita-mukhākṛtiḥ indicates that the deer’s face had beautiful stripes.
