Chapter 42: Mārīca Becomes an Enchanting Deer
Text 3.42.31
अनर्हारण्यवासस्य सा तं रत्नमयं मृगम्।
मुक्तामणिविचित्राङ्गं ददर्श परमाङ्गना॥
anarhāraṇya-vāsasya sā taṁ ratnamayaṁ mṛgam
muktā-maṇi-vicitrāṅgaṁ dadarśa paramāṅganā
anarhā = didn’t deserve; araṇya-vāsasya = to reside in the forest; sā = she; tam = the; ratnamayam = excellent 2; mṛgam = deer; muktā-maṇi-vicitra-aṅgam = whose body was variously colored with pearl-like spots; dadarśa = noticed; parama-aṅganā = that excellent lady.
She didn’t deserve to reside in the forest. That excellent lady noticed the excellent deer whose body was variously colored with pearl-like spots.1
“She didn’t deserve to reside in the forest” indicates that she was too eager to get the deer because it is stated that the time to complete the vow [of being in the forest for fourteen years] was close by.1
