Chapter 43: Sītā Sees the Magical Deer
Text 3.43.16-17

यदि ग्रहणमभ्येति जीवन्नेव मृगस्तव।
आश्चर्यभूतं भवति विस्मयं जनयिष्यति॥

समाप्तवनवासानां राज्यस्थानां च नः पुनः।
अन्तःपुरविभूषार्थो मृग एष भविष्यति॥

yadi grahaṇam abhyeti jīvann eva mṛgas tava
āścarya-bhūtaṁ bhavati vismayaṁ janayiṣyati

samāpta-vana-vāsānāṁ rājyasthānāṁ ca naḥ punaḥ
antaḥ-pura-vibhūṣārtho mṛga eṣa bhaviṣyati

yadi = if; grahaṇam = grasp; abhyeti = comes under; jīvan eva = while it is alive; mṛgaḥ = the deer; tava = Your; āścarya-bhūtam = an object of wonder; bhavati = it will be; vismayam janayiṣyati = it will [continue to] astonish us; samāpta-vana-vāsānām = after our residence in the forest is over; rājyasthānām = [when] we are [back] in our kingdom; ca = and; naḥ = for us; punaḥ = moreover; antaḥ-pura-vibhūṣā-arthaḥ = decorate the inner quarters; mṛgaḥ = deer; eṣaḥ = this; bhaviṣyati = will also.

If the deer comes under Your grasp while it is alive, it will be an object of wonder for us. And [when] we are [back] in our kingdom after our residence in the forest is over, it will [continue to] astonish us.1 Moreover, this deer will also decorate the inner quarters [there].

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: tadā eṣa mṛgaḥ āścarya-bhūtam asmākaṁ vismayāvahaṁ sattvaṁ bhavati idānīm iti śeṣaḥ.
