Chapter 43: Sītā Sees the Magical Deer
Text 3.43.25
न वने नन्दनोद्देशे न चैत्ररथसंश्रये।
कुतः पृथिव्यां सौमित्रे योऽस्य कश्चित्समो मृगः॥
na vane nandanoddeśe na caitraratha-saṁśraye
kutaḥ pṛthivyāṁ saumitre yo ’sya kaścit samo mṛgaḥ
na = can be found neither; vane = in the forest; nandana-uddeśe = known as Nandana; na = nor; caitraratha-saṁśraye = in that named Caitraratha; kutaḥ = why [would it be found]; pṛthivyām = on earth; saumitre = Saumitri; yaḥ = that; asya = to this one; kaścit = a; samaḥ = is equal; mṛgaḥ = deer.
Saumitri, a deer that is equal to this one can be found neither in the forest known as Nandana nor in that named Caitraratha. Why [would it be found] on earth?
GLOSS. Caitraratha-saṁśraye indicates that the deer wouldn’t [even] be found in a place nondifferent from Caitraratha, that is, Kuvera’s forest which is filled with several trees.
