तं वञ्चयानो राजेन्द्रमापतन्तं निरीक्ष्य वै।
बभूवान्तर्हितस्त्रासात्पुनः सन्दर्शनेऽभवत्।
बद्धासिर्धनुरादाय प्रदुद्राव यतो मृगः॥
taṁ vañcayāno rājendram āpatantaṁ nirīkṣya vai
babhūvāntarhitas trāsāt punaḥ sandarśane ’bhavat
baddhāsir dhanur ādāya pradudrāva yato mṛgaḥ
tam = Rāma; vañcayānaḥ = while deceiving; rāja-indram = the ruler of kings; āpatantam = who was approaching [him]; nirīkṣya vai = as soon as he saw; babhūva antarhitaḥ = Mārīca disappeared; trāsāt = in extreme fear; punaḥ = [and] again; sandarśane = visible [to Him]; abhavat = became; baddha-asiḥ = holding a sword; dhanuḥ = His bow; ādāya = and taking; pradudrāva = [Lord Rāma] ran; yataḥ = to where; mṛgaḥ = the deer was.
While deceiving the ruler of kings who was approaching [him], Mārīca disappeared in extreme fear as soon as he saw Rāma [and] again became visible [to Him].1 Holding a sword and taking His bow, [Lord Rāma] ran to where the deer was.
GLOSS. “[Mārīca again] became visible [to Him]” indicates that Mārīca came within the range of [Lord Rāma’s] sight.1
