Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 45: Sītā Chastises Lakṣmaṇa
Text 3.45.5

सौमित्रे मित्ररूपेण भ्रातुस्त्वमसि शत्रुवत्।
यस्त्वमस्यामवस्थायां भ्रातरं नाभिपत्स्यसे॥

saumitre mitra-rūpeṇa bhrātus tvam asi śatruvat
yas tvam asyām avasthāyāṁ bhrātaraṁ nābhipatsyase

saumitre = Saumitri; mitra-rūpeṇa = have the appearance of a friend; bhrātuḥ = of Your brother; tvam = You; asi = are; śatruvat = like His enemy; yaḥ = who; tvam = [for] You; asyām = in this; avasthāyām = situation; bhrātaram = Your brother; na abhipatsyase = don’t hasten near.

Saumitri, You who have the appearance of a friend of Your brother are like His enemy [for] You don’t hasten near Your brother in this situation.1

She considered that in appearance Lakṣmaṇa was a friend [of Rāmacandra] but by action He was as good as Rāma’s enemy, [for] He didn’t go to Rāma now.1

1 This appears to indicate that the first effect of uncontrolled anger is to distrust the bona fide devotees and servants of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: śātrava-kriyāṁ darśayati yas tvam iti.
