Chapter 47: Rāvaṇa Reveals his Identity to Sītā
Text 3.47.9
इति ब्रुवाणां कैकेयीं श्वशुरो मे स मानदः।
अयाचतार्थैरन्वर्थैर्न च याच्ञां चकार सा॥
iti bruvāṇāṁ kaikeyīṁ śvaśuro me sa mānadaḥ
ayācatārthair anvarthair na ca yācñāṁ cakāra sā
iti = these [words]; bruvāṇām = spoke; kaikeyīm = when Kaikeyī; śvaśuraḥ = father-in-law; me = of mine; saḥ = that; mānadaḥ = respectful; ayācata = requested [her] to accept; arthaiḥ = items of wealth; anvarthaiḥ = valuable; na ca = not; yācñām cakāra = did accede to his request; sā = she.
When Kaikeyī spoke these [words], that respectful father-in-law of mine requested [her] to accept valuable items of wealth.1 She did not accede to his request.
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: anvarthaiḥ arthānugataiḥ saprayojanair iti yāvat. upabhoga-kṣamair ity arthaḥ.
Sītā-devī’s father-in-law was very respectful [by nature]. He offered Kaikeyī gold, jewels and the like. In other words, he humbly requested her to accept these valuable items of wealth instead of the two boons that she had asked for.
Factually Sītā-devī’s husband was not fit to be exiled since He was very young and because of His auspicious qualities. With this in mind, she speaks the next verses.
