Chapter 47: Rāvaṇa Reveals his Identity to Sītā
Text 3.47.11
रामेति प्रथितो लोके गुणवान्सत्यवाञ्शुचिः।
विशालाक्षो महा-बाहुः सर्वभूतहिते रतः॥
rāmeti prathito loke guṇavān satyavāñ śuciḥ
viśālākṣo mahā-bāhuḥ sarva-bhūta-hite rataḥ
rāma = Rāma; iti = as; prathitaḥ = He who is celebrated; loke = in the world; guṇavān = is of good character; satyavān = truthful; śuciḥ = and pure; viśāla-akṣaḥ = with wide eyes; mahā-bāhuḥ = large arms; sarva-bhūta-hite = in the welfare of all creatures; rataḥ = He is absorbed.
He who is celebrated in the world as Rāma is of good character, truthful and pure with wide eyes, large arms. He is absorbed in the welfare of all creatures.
The previous verse stated that Lord Rāma’s age was inappropriate for one to be exiled to the forest. The current verse states that He was unfit to be exiled as the possessor of auspicious qualities.
The exile of such a person took place because of Daśaratha’s offense. With this in mind, she speaks the following verse.
