Chapter 47: Rāvaṇa Reveals his Identity to Sītā
Text 3.47.24
एवं ब्रुवन्त्यां सीतायां रामपत्न्यां महाबलः।
प्रत्युवाचोत्तरं तीव्रं रावणो राक्षसाधिपः॥
evaṁ bruvantyāṁ sītāyāṁ rāma-patnyāṁ mahā-balaḥ
pratyuvācottaraṁ tīvraṁ rāvaṇo rākṣasādhipaḥ
evam = thus; bruvantyām = spoke; sītāyām = Sītā-devī; rāma-patnyām = when Rāma’s wife; mahā-balaḥ = the greatly powerful; prati-uvāca uttaram = replied [as follows]; tīvram = impetuously; rāvaṇaḥ = Rāvaṇa; rākṣasa-adhipaḥ = ruler of the rākṣasas.
When Rāma’s wife Sītā-devī spoke thus, Rāvaṇa, the greatly powerful ruler of the rākṣasas, impetuously replied [as follows].
Rāvaṇa had waited for the opportunity to reveal his glory. So he immediately [replied to her as follows].
