Chapter 47: Rāvaṇa Reveals his Identity to Sītā
Text 3.47.36
त्वं पुनर्जम्बुकः सिंहीं मामिच्छसि सुदुर्लभाम्।
नाहं शक्या त्वया स्प्रष्टुमादित्यस्य प्रभा यथा॥
tvaṁ punar jambukaḥ siṁhīṁ mām icchasi sudurlabhām
nāhaṁ śakyā tvayā spraṣṭum ādityasya prabhā yathā
tvam = you; punar = on the other hand; jambukaḥ = a fox; siṁhīm = lioness; mām = me; icchasi = desires; sudurlabhām = an unattainable; na aham śakyā = I cannot; tvayā = by you; spraṣṭum = be touched; ādityasya = of the sun; prabhā = the illumination; yathā = like.
On the other hand, you, a fox, desires me, an unattainable lioness. Like the illumination of the sun, I cannot be touched by you!
Rāvaṇa cannot touch her because she cannot exist without Rāma just as the illumination of the sun cannot exist without the sun.
