Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 47: Rāvaṇa Reveals his Identity to Sītā
Text 3.47.49

तां वेपमानामुपलक्ष्य सीतां स रावणो मृत्युसमप्रभावः।
कुलं बलं नाम च कर्म च स्वं समाचचक्षे भयकारणार्थम्॥

tāṁ vepamānām upalakṣya sītāṁ
sa rāvaṇo mṛtyu-sama-prabhāvaḥ
kulaṁ balaṁ nāma ca karma ca svaṁ
samācacakṣe bhaya-kāraṇārtham

tām vepamānām = was shaking in fear; upalakṣya = noticed that; sītām = Sītā-devī; saḥ = he; rāvaṇaḥ = Rāvaṇa; mṛtyu-sama-prabhāvaḥ = had the power of Yamarāja; kulam = lineage; balam = strength; nāma = name; ca = and; karma = heroic activities; ca = and; svam = his; samācacakṣe = he described; bhaya-kāraṇa-artham = to frighten her even more.

Rāvaṇa noticed that Sītā-devī was shaking in fear. He had the power of Yamarāja and he described his lineage, strength, name and heroic activities to frighten her even more.

Rāvaṇa described his lineage and so on because he thought that he could bring Sītā under his control.

NOTE. If Mother Sītā had absolute confidence in Lord Rāmacandra, why was she shaking in fear? Śrī Govindarāja will indicate in his comment to text 3.56.36 that she exhibited such behavior to teach the world that a woman sworn in chastity to her husband should be apprehensive of being taken away from her husband.1
