Chapter 47: Rāvaṇa Reveals his Identity to Sītā
Text 3.47.48

इतीव तद्वाक्यमदुष्टभावा सुधृष्टमुक्त्वा रजनीचरं तम्।
गात्रप्रकम्पव्यथिता बभूव वातोद्धता सा कदलीव तन्वी॥

itīva tad vākyam aduṣṭa-bhāvā
sudhṛṣṭam uktvā rajanīcaraṁ tam
gātra-prakampa-vyathitā babhūva
vātoddhatā sā kadalīva tanvī

iti iva tat vākyam = in this manner; aduṣṭa-bhāvā = her attitude was pure; sudhṛṣṭam = with great confidence; uktvā = after speaking; rajanīcaram = night-ranger; tam = to the; gātra-prakampa-vyathitā = distressed and her body trembled; babhūva = became; vāta-uddhatā = shaken by the wind; = she; kadalī = plantain tree; iva = like; tanvī = a delicate.

Her attitude was pure. After speaking in this manner to the night-ranger with great confidence, she became distressed and her body trembled like a delicate plantain tree shaken by the wind.

NOTE. Mother Sītā’s absolute faith in Lord Rāma’s desire and ability to rescue her from all dangers whatsoever is both remarkable and philosophically significant.

Section 11 of An Analysis of the Cardinal Teachings of Śrī Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa indicated that Sītā-devī’s confidence in Rāma is a lesson to conditioned souls entrapped in their respective material bodies. As long as we are painfully imprisoned within our material bodies, we should, under the guidance of a bona fide ācārya sent by the Supreme Lord, maintain absolute confidence in Him.1
