Chapter 48: Sītā-devī Condemns Rāvaṇa
Text 3.48.10
मम पारे समुद्रस्य लङ्का नाम पुरी शुभा।
सम्पूर्णा राक्षसैर्घोरैर्यथेन्द्रस्यामरावती॥
mama pāre samudrasya laṅkā nāma purī śubhā
sampūrṇā rākṣasair ghorair yathendrasyāmarāvatī
mama = my; pāre = is on Trikūṭa which resembles the other shore; samudrasya = of the ocean; laṅkā = Laṅkā; nāma = named; purī = city; śubhā = splendid; sampūrṇā = it is filled; rākṣasaiḥ = rākṣasas; ghoraiḥ = with terrible; yathā = it resembles; indrasya = Indra’s; amarāvatī = Amarāvatī.
My splendid city named Laṅkā is on Trikūṭa which resembles the other shore of the ocean.1 It is filled with terrible rākṣasas. It resembles Indra’s Amarāvatī.
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: pāre pāra-sadṛśe trikūṭe. samudrasya madhya iti pūrvam uktatvāt.
Rāvaṇa wanted to tell Sītā-devī that his Laṅkā was as extraordinary as Indra’s Amarāvatī. He describes Laṅkā in the next verse.
