Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 48: Sītā-devī Condemns Rāvaṇa
Text 3.48.14
भुञ्जाना मानुषान्भोगान्दिव्यांश्च वरवर्णिनि।
न स्मरिष्यसि रामस्य मानुषस्य गतायुषः॥
bhuñjānā mānuṣān bhogān divyāṁś ca vara-varṇini
na smariṣyasi rāmasya mānuṣasya gatāyuṣaḥ
bhuñjānā = by enjoying; mānuṣān = human; bhogān = objects of pleasure; divyān = celestial; ca = and; vara-varṇini = O lady of excellent complexion; na = not; smariṣyasi = you will remember; rāmasya = Rāma; mānuṣasya = a human; gata-āyuṣaḥ = whose lifespan is almost over.
O lady of excellent complexion, by enjoying human and celestial objects of pleasure you will not remember Rāma, a human whose lifespan is almost over.
Human objects of pleasure are those that can be attained in the world of humans. Celestial objects of pleasure are those that can be attained in Svarga.
By using the word gatāyuṣaḥ, Rāvaṇa intends to tell Sītā-devī that Rāma will have a meager lifespan.
In this text, Rāvaṇa dismisses Sītā-devī’s statement in text 3.47.4 in which she said that she had experienced superhuman delights [in Lord Rāma’s association in Ayodhyā]. From the next text, Rāvaṇa responds to Mother Sītā’s statement about Rāma being better than him.
