Chapter 48: Sītā-devī Condemns Rāvaṇa
Text 3.48.16
तेन किं भ्रष्टराज्येन रामेण गतचेतसा।
करिष्यसि विशालाक्षि तापसेन तपस्विना॥
tena kiṁ bhraṣṭa-rājyena rāmeṇa gata-cetasā
kariṣyasi viśālākṣi tāpasena tapasvinā
tena = with that; kim = what; bhraṣṭa-rājyena = He has lost His kingdom; rāmeṇa = Rāma; gata-cetasā = lost His mind; kariṣyasi = will you do; viśāla-akṣi = O large-eyed lady; tāpasena = is engaged in austerities; tapasvinā = and pitiably.
O large-eyed lady, what will you do with that Rāma? He has lost His kingdom, lost His mind and is pitiably engaged in austerities.
1 Vācaspatyam attributes this sarcastic statement to Udbhaṭa who is presumably the famous eighth century Kashmirian writer on literary ornamentation—a non-Vaiṣṇava.
Rāvaṇa thinks that Rāmacandra has lost His mind, that is, His mind is bewildered about what should be done and what should not be done. According to him, Śrī Rāma had turned unheroic on the logic of bhagnāḥ kṛṣer bhāgavatā bhavanti, “When deprived of agriculture [and revenue from it], they become Bhāgavatas!”1
Rāvaṇa intends to tell Sītā-devī, “Don’t have any hope that Rāma will get the kingdom after all that has happened till now.”
GLOSS. [Tāpasena indicates that Rāma] had donned the attire of an ascetic. Tapasvinā indicates that He lived like an ascetic.
