Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 48: Sītā-devī Condemns Rāvaṇa
Text 3.48.24

जीवेच्चिरं वज्रधरस्य हस्ताच्छचीं प्रधृष्याप्रतिरूपरूपाम्।
न मादृशीं राक्षस दूषयित्वा पीतामृतस्यापि तवास्ति मोक्षः॥

jīvec ciraṁ vajradharasya hastāc
chacīṁ pradhṛṣyāpratirūpa-rūpām
na mādṛśīṁ rākṣasa dūṣayitvā
pītāmṛtasyāpi tavāsti mokṣaḥ

jīvet = one may live; ciram = long; vajradharasya = of Indra who wields the thunderbolt; hastāt = from the hand; śacīm = Śacī; pradhṛṣya = after abducting; apratirūpa-rūpām = whose beauty is unparalleled; na = no; mādṛśīm = a lady like me; rākṣasa = O rākṣasa; dūṣayitvā = upon oppressing; pīta-amṛtasya = if you have drunk celestial nectar; api = even; tava asti = you will have; mokṣaḥ = freedom from death.

One may live long after abducting Śacī, whose beauty is unparalleled, from the hand of Indra who wields the thunderbolt. O rākṣasa, you will have no freedom from death upon oppressing a lady like me, even if you have drunk celestial nectar.

In extreme anger, she now repeats what she had spoken [earlier].

She says mādṛśīm (“a lady like me”) instead of mām (“me”) to avoid vulgarity.1 [Pītāmṛtasyāpi (“even if you have drunk celestial nectar”) indicates that] even celestial nectar is incapable of protecting Rāvaṇa [if he kidnaps her].

[1] dvandvaṁ kalaha-yugmayoḥ. (Amara)

[2] kakṣyā prakoṣṭhe harmyādeḥ kāñcyāṁ madhyebha-bandhane. (Amara)

[3] tapasvī tāpasaḥ śocyaḥ. (Amara)

1 It is vulgar to glorify oneself. Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: mādṛśīm. aślīlatva-parihārāya na mām ity anuktiḥ.
