Chapter 49: Rāvaṇa Kidnaps Sītā
Text 3.49.1
सीताया वचनं श्रुत्वा दशग्रीवः प्रतापवान्।
हस्ते हस्तं समाहत्य चकार सुमहद्वपुः॥
sītāyā vacanaṁ śrutvā daśagrīvaḥ pratāpavān
haste hastaṁ samāhatya cakāra sumahad-vapuḥ
sītāyāḥ = Sītā-devī’s; vacanam = words; śrutvā = hearing; daśagrīvaḥ = Rāvaṇa; pratāpavān = the powerful; haste = on another; hastam = one hand of his; samāhatya = placed; cakāra = and assumed; sumahat-vapuḥ = a very large form.
Hearing Sītā-devī’s words, the powerful Rāvaṇa placed one hand of his on another and assumed a very large form.
We worship the husband of Sītā-devī, who alone should be meditated upon constantly and during the most extreme crises, and apart from whom there is no one else to be meditated upon.
Placing one hand on the other is a gesture of anger.
