Chapter 49: Rāvaṇa Kidnaps Sītā
Text 3.49.29
हन्तेदानीं सकामास्तु कैकेयी सह बान्धवैः।
ह्रिये यद्धर्मकामस्य धर्मपत्नी यशस्विनः॥
hantedānīṁ sakāmāstu kaikeyī saha bāndhavaiḥ
hriye yad dharma-kāmasya dharma-patnī yaśasvinaḥ
hanta = alas; idānīm = now; sakāmā = the desires become fulfilled; astu = may; kaikeyī = of Kaikeyī; saha bāndhavaiḥ = and her relatives; hriye = is being abducted; yat = that; dharma-kāmasya = who desires dharma; dharma-patnī = I, a dhārmika wife; yaśasvinaḥ = of an illustrious one.
Alas, may the desires of Kaikeyī and her relatives become fulfilled now that I, a dhārmika wife of an illustrious one who desires dharma, is being abducted!
In her heart, Vaidehī always thought, “Kaikeyī has sent me to the forest so that I could be abducted by the rākṣasas and so on.”
She now reveals this thought on basis of the maxim, supta-pramatta-kupitānāṁ bhāva-jñānaṁ dṛṣṭam: “The [hidden] intentions of persons are exposed when they are asleep, intoxicated or enraged.”
