Chapter 50: Jaṭāyu Challenges Rāvaṇa
Text 3.50.5

तस्यैषा लोकनाथस्य धर्मपत्नी यशस्विनी।
सीता नाम वरारोहा यां त्वं हर्तुमिहेच्छसि॥

tasyaiṣā loka-nāthasya dharma-patnī yaśasvinī
sītā nāma varārohā yāṁ tvaṁ hartum ihecchasi

tasya = of the; eṣā = this lady; loka-nāthasya = protector of the worlds; dharma-patnī = dhārmika wife; yaśasvinī = is the illustrious; sītā = as Sītā; nāma = is known; vara-ārohā = this beautiful woman; yām = whom; tvam = you; hartum = to abduct; iha = now; icchasi = want.

This lady is the illustrious dhārmika wife of the protector of the worlds.1 This beautiful woman whom you want to abduct now is known as Sītā.

Dharma-patnī (“dhārmika wife”) means “an associate performer of dharma.”1

1 To kidnap a dhārmika wife of a man is itself a great sin. Technical note: dharma-patnīty anenaitad-dharaṇe mahā-pāpaṁ sūcitam.

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: saha-dharmacāriṇīti dharma-patnī-śabdārthaḥ.
