Chapter 50: Jaṭāyu Challenges Rāvaṇa
Text 3.50.19
षष्टिर्वर्षसहस्राणि मम जातस्य रावण।
पितृपैतामहं राज्यं यथावदनुतिष्ठतः॥
ṣaṣṭir varṣa-sahasrāṇi mama jātasya rāvaṇa
pitṛ-paitāmahaṁ rājyaṁ yathāvad anutiṣṭhataḥ
ṣaṣṭiḥ = sixty; varṣa-sahasrāṇi = sixty thousand years have gone by; mama = my; jātasya = since birth; rāvaṇa = Rāvaṇa; pitṛ-paitāmaham = of my father and grandfathers; rājyam = the kingdom; yathāvat = properly; anutiṣṭhataḥ = I have maintained.
Rāvaṇa, sixty thousand years have gone by since my birth. I have properly maintained the kingdom of my father and grandfathers.
The first half of the verse indicates that Jaṭāyu had grown old by age. The second half of the verse indicates that he had grown old by deed.
