Chapter 50: Jaṭāyu Challenges Rāvaṇa
Text 3.50.25
नहि मे जीवमानस्य नयिष्यसि शुभामिमाम्।
सीतां कमलपत्राक्षीं रामस्य महिषीं प्रियाम्॥
na hi me jīvamānasya nayiṣyasi śubhām imām
sītāṁ kamala-patrākṣīṁ rāmasya mahiṣīṁ priyām
na hi = not; me jīvamānasya = as long as I am alive; nayiṣyasi = you will be able to abduct; śubhām = auspicious lady; imām = this; sītām = Sītā; kamala-patra-akṣīm = whose eyes resemble lotus leaves; rāmasya = Rāma’s; mahiṣīm = queen; priyām = beloved.
As long as I am alive, you will not be able to abduct this auspicious lady Sītā, Rāma’s beloved queen whose eyes resemble lotus leaves.
Jaṭāyu then anticipated that Rāvaṇa might ask, “What can you do [to me]?” and spoke the following.
