Chapter 53: Sītā Chastises Rāvaṇa
Text 3.53.1
खमुत्पतन्तं तं दृष्ट्वा मैथिली जनकात्मजा।
दुःखिता परमोद्विग्ना भये महति वर्तिनी॥
kham utpatantaṁ taṁ dṛṣṭvā maithilī janakātmajā
duḥkhitā paramodvignā bhaye mahati vartinī
kham = in the sky; utpatantam = flying; tam = him; dṛṣṭvā = seeing; maithilī = the princess of Mithilā; janaka-ātmajā = Jānakī; duḥkhitā = became distressed; parama-udvignā = she became utterly terrified; bhaye = danger; mahati = of that great; vartinī = in the midst.
Seeing him flying in the sky, Jānakī, the princess of Mithilā, became distressed. In the midst of that great danger, she became utterly terrified.
In this chapter, Sītā-devī repeatedly criticizes Rāvaṇa’s activity of kidnapping [her] and so forth.
Jānakī became utterly terrified, that is, she was trembling.
