Chapter 53: Sītā Chastises Rāvaṇa
Text 3.53.5
यो हि मामुद्यतस्त्रातुं सोप्यऽयं विनिपातितः।
गृध्रराजः पुराणोऽसौ श्वशुरस्य सखा मम॥
yo hi mām udyatas trātuṁ so ’py ayaṁ vinipātitaḥ
gṛdhra-rājaḥ purāṇo ’sau śvaśurasya sakhā mama
yaḥ hi = who; mām = me; udyataḥ = strove; trātum = to rescue; saḥ = but [the]; api = and; ayam vinipātitaḥ = you have killed him; gṛdhra-rājaḥ = king of vultures; purāṇaḥ = is very old; asau = he; śvaśurasya = of father-in-law; sakhā = is a friend; mama = my.
And you have killed him who strove to rescue me [but] the king of vultures is very old—he is a friend of my father-in-law!
This is a sarcastic statement. She intends to tell him, “You think that you are a hero [just] because you killed a very old [bird].”
