Chapter 53: Sītā Chastises Rāvaṇa
Text 3.53.22
न हि त्वमीदृशं कृत्वा तस्यालीकं महात्मनः।
धरितुं शक्ष्यसि चिरं विषं पीत्वेव निर्घृणः॥
na hi tvam īdṛśaṁ kṛtvā tasyālīkaṁ mahātmanaḥ
dharituṁ śakṣyasi ciraṁ viṣaṁ pītveva nirghṛṇaḥ
na hi = never; tvam = you; īdṛśam = like this; kṛtvā = after performing an act; tasya = the; alīkam = [for it] displeases 1; mahā-ātmanaḥ = great soul Lord Rāma; dharitum = to sustain your life; śakṣyasi = will be able; ciram = for long; viṣam = poison; pītvā = the act of drinking; iva = and resembles; nirghṛṇaḥ = who are so merciless.
You, who are so merciless, will never be able to sustain your life for long after performing an act like this [for it] displeases the great soul Lord Rāma and resembles the act of drinking poison.
Anticipating that Rāvaṇa might object, “Let [me go to hell] later on, [but] I am happy right now!” Sītā-devī states the current verse.
