Chapter 54: Rāvaṇa Brings Sītā to Laṅkā
Text 3.54.5
स च पम्पामतिक्रम्य लङ्कामभिमुखः पुरीम्।
जगाम रुदतीं गृह्य वैदेहीं राक्षसेश्वरः॥
sa ca pampām atikramya laṅkām abhimukhaḥ purīm
jagāma rudatīṁ gṛhya vaidehīṁ rākṣaseśvaraḥ
saḥ ca = the; pampām = Pampā; atikramya = crossed; laṅkām = of Laṅkā; abhimukhaḥ = towards; purīm = the city; jagāma = and headed; rudatīm = the weeping; gṛhya = grabbing; vaidehīm = Vaidehī; rākṣasa-īśvaraḥ = lord of the rākṣasas.
Grabbing Vaidehī, the lord of the rākṣasas crossed Pampā and headed towards the city of Laṅkā.
He passed through the sky above Pampā. “He headed towards the city of Laṅkā” indicates that till now he had fixed his glance on Śrī Rāma’s āśrama, [but] now he freely moved [towards Laṅkā]. Therefore he will be described as susaṁhṛṣṭaḥ (“in great delight”).
