Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 55: Rāvaṇa Flatters Sītā
Text 3.55.18
साधु किं तेऽन्यथाबुद्ध्या रोचयस्व वचो मम।
भजस्व माभितप्तस्य प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥
sādhu kiṁ te ’nyathā-buddhyā rocayasva vaco mama
bhajasva mābhitaptasya prasādaṁ kartum arhasi
sādhu = this is good; kim = what is the use of; te = your; anyathā-buddhyā = thinking otherwise; rocayasva = be pleased; vacaḥ = with words; mama = my; bhajasva = accept; mā = me; abhitaptasya = [unto me for I am] burning in passion [for you]; prasādam kartum = be merciful; arhasi = you should;
This is good. What is the use of your thinking otherwise? Be pleased with my words. Accept me. You should be merciful [unto me for I am] burning in passion [for you].
“Be pleased with my words” means “Accept my words.” “What is the use of thinking otherwise?” means “Don’t think about Rāma.”
In the next verse Rāvaṇa tells her, “There is no question of Rāma coming here.”
