Chapter 55: Rāvaṇa Flatters Sītā
Text 3.55.17
बहूनां स्त्रीसहस्राणां मम योऽसौ परिग्रहः।
तासां त्वमीश्वरा सीते मम भार्या भव प्रिये॥
bahūnāṁ strī-sahasrāṇāṁ mama yo ’sau parigrahaḥ
tāsāṁ tvam īśvarā sīte mama bhāryā bhava priye
bahūnām = amidst the many; strī-sahasrāṇām = thousands of women living in my inner quarters; mama = my; yaḥ asau = here; parigrahaḥ = wives 3; tāsām = of; tvam īśvarā = and the mistress; sīte = Sītā; mama = my; bhāryā = wife; bhava = become; priye = dear.
Dear Sītā, become my wife and the mistress of my wives here amidst the many thousands of women living in my inner quarters.1
