Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 56: Sītā is Taken to Aśoka-vana
Text 3.57.10
यदि पश्येत्स रामस्त्वां रोषदीप्तेन चक्षुषा।
रक्षस्त्वमद्य निर्दग्धो गच्छेः सद्यः पराभवम्॥
yadi paśyet sa rāmas tvāṁ roṣa-dīptena cakṣuṣā
rakṣas tvam adya nirdagdho gaccheḥ sadyaḥ parābhavam
yadi = if; paśyet = were to see; saḥ rāmaḥ = Śrī Rāma; tvām = you; roṣa-dīptena = blazing with fury; cakṣuṣā = with His eyes; rakṣaḥ = O rākṣasa; tvam = you; adya = today; nirdagdhaḥ = will burn down; gaccheḥ = and attain; sadyaḥ = instant; parābhavam = defeat.
O rākṣasa, if Śrī Rāma were to see you with His eyes blazing with fury, you will burn down today and attain instant defeat.
“You will burn down” means “You will be greatly tormented.”
NOTE. When the Lord resolves to get something done, He will ensure that it happens. This is stated by Lord Kṛṣṇa in Bhagavad-gītā 11.33 thus:
tasmāt tvam uttiṣṭha yaśo labhasva
jitvā śatrūn bhuṅkṣva rājyaṁ samṛddham
mayaivaite nihatāḥ pūrvam eva
nimitta-mātraṁ bhava savya-sācin
“Therefore get up. Prepare to fight and win glory. Conquer your enemies and enjoy a flourishing kingdom. They are already put to death by My arrangement, and you, O Savyasācī, can be but an instrument in the fight.”
With regard to the above verse from Bhagavad-gītā, Lord Kṛṣṇa states that the Kauravas have “already been put to death” and yet the Lord insists that Arjuna attack the Kauravas and their allies in the war of Kurukṣetra and be His instrument to destroy them.
Similarly, Mother Sītā points out that Lord Rāma would have resolved to kill Rāvaṇa and that is tantamount to Rāvaṇa’s death because the will of the Supreme Lord always becomes a reality.
