Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 56: Sītā is Taken to Aśoka-vana
Text 3.57.11
यश्चन्द्रं नभसो भूमौ पातयेन्नाशयेत वा।
सागरं शोषयेद्वापि स सीतां मोचयेदिह॥
yaś candraṁ nabhaso bhūmau pātayen nāśayeta vā
sāgaraṁ śoṣayed vāpi sa sītāṁ mocayed iha
yaḥ = who; candram = the moon; nabhasaḥ = from the sky; bhūmau = to the earth; pātayet = can cause to fall; nāśayeta = destroy it; vā = or; sāgaram = the ocean; śoṣayet = dry up; vā api = or else; saḥ = He; sītām = Sītā; mocayet = can obviously rescue; iha = [from] here.
He, who can cause the moon to fall from the sky to the earth or destroy it or else dry up the ocean, can obviously rescue Sītā [from] here.1
1 This is Sītā-devī’s refutation of Rāvaṇa’s boastful claims that Laṅkā cannot be attacked by even the devas and asuras. Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: saḥ sītāṁ mocayed iti kim uta.
