Chapter 56: Sītā is Taken to Aśoka-vana
Text 3.57.24
सीताया वचनं श्रुत्वा परुषं रोमहर्षणम्।
प्रत्युवाच ततः सीतां भयसन्दर्शनं वचः॥
sītāyā vacanaṁ śrutvā paruṣaṁ roma-harṣaṇam
pratyuvāca tataḥ sītāṁ bhaya-sandarśanaṁ vacaḥ
sītāyāḥ = Sītā’s; vacanam = words; śrutvā = after hearing; paruṣam = harsh; roma-harṣaṇam = that made his hair stand on end; pratyuvāca tataḥ = [Rāvaṇa] replied; sītām = to Sītā; bhaya-sandarśanam = with [the following] frightening; vacaḥ = words.
After hearing Sītā’s harsh words that made his hair stand on end, [Rāvaṇa] replied to Sītā with [the following] frightening words.
[Sītā’s words] made his hair stand on end because they infuriated him.
