यथा वै मृगसङ्घाश्च गोमायुश्चैव भैरवम्।
वाश्यन्ते शकुनाश्चापि प्रदीप्तामभितो दिशम्॥
अपि स्वस्ति भवेत्तस्या राजपुत्र्या महाबल॥
yathā vai mṛga-saṅghāś ca gomāyuś caiva bhairavam
vāśyante śakunāś cāpi pradīptām abhito diśam
api svasti bhavet tasyā rāja-putryā mahā-bala
yathā vai = since; mṛga-saṅghāḥ ca = the deer; gomāyuḥ = jackals; ca eva bhairavam = terribly; vāśyante = howl and screech; śakunāḥ = birds; ca api = and; pradīptām = the bright; abhitaḥ = while facing; diśam = directions; api = will; svasti bhavet = everything be alright; tasyāḥ = for that; rāja-putryāḥ = princess; mahā-bala = O greatly powerful one.
O greatly powerful one, since the deer, jackals and birds howl and screech terribly while facing the bright directions, will everything be alright for that princess?
“The bright directions” refers to the direction of the sun and each of the two sub-directions by its side. When crows and other birds, jackals and other such animals as well as the black deer and other deer scream while facing the direction of the sun, it is indicative of [imminent] distress.
He asks, “Will everything be alright for that princess?” out of excessive anxiety.
He then points out to Lakṣmaṇa the following facts.
