रुदन्तमिव वृक्षैश्च म्लानपुष्पमृगद्विजम्।
श्रिया विहीनं विध्वस्तं सन्त्यक्तवनदेवतम्॥
विप्रकीर्णाजिनकुशं विप्रविद्धबृसीकटम्।
दृष्ट्वा शून्यं निजस्थानं विललाप पुनःपुनः॥
rudantam iva vṛkṣaiś ca mlāna-puṣpa-mṛga-dvijam
śriyā vihīnaṁ vidhvastaṁ santyakta-vana-devatam
viprakīrṇājina-kuśaṁ vipraviddha-bṛsī-kaṭam
dṛṣṭvā śūnyaṁ nija-sthānaṁ vilalāpa punaḥ punaḥ
rudantam = to cry; iva = seemed; vṛkṣaiḥ ca = along with the trees; mlāna-puṣpa-mṛga-dvijam = the flowers that Sītā had plucked as well as the deer and birds there were pale [in distress]; śriyā = of luster; vihīnam = the residence was devoid; vidhvastam = and disheveled; santyakta-vana-devatam = and the forest deity had left it; viprakīrṇa-ajina-kuśam = deer skin and kuśa grass were scattered about; vipraviddha-bṛsī-kaṭam = the seats and mats for the sages were upside down; dṛṣṭvā = when He saw; śūnyam = that His house was vacant; nija-sthānam = His residence; vilalāpa = He lamented; punaḥ punaḥ = again and again.
His residence seemed to cry along with the trees. The flowers that Sītā had plucked as well as the deer and birds there were pale [in distress]. The residence was devoid of luster and disheveled, and the forest deity had left it. Deer skin and kuśa grass were scattered about. The seats and mats for the sages were upside down. When He saw that His house was vacant, He lamented again and again.
“His residence seemed to cry along with the trees” because the bees buzzed about softly. Deer skin and kuśa grass were scattered about, that is, they were out of place. They had been given [by Sītā] to Rāvaṇa [when he had appeared as a] sannyāsī. The seats and mats for the sages were upside down because Sītā-devī had held them [in her hands before Rāvaṇa had her throw them when he abducted her]. Lord Rāma’s home was vacant, that is, it was without Sītā, [and therefore] He lamented.
