मया विरहिता बाला रक्षसां भक्षणाय वै।
सार्थेनेव परित्यक्ता भक्षिता बहुबान्धवा॥
mayā virahitā bālā rakṣasāṁ bhakṣaṇāya vai
sārtheneva parityaktā bhakṣitā bahu-bāndhavā
mayā = from Me; virahitā = separated; bālā = the girl; rakṣasām = for the rākṣasas; bhakṣaṇāya = would have become food; vai = certainly; sa-arthena = after her co-travelers; iva = like; parityaktā = abandoned her; bhakṣitā = the woman eaten [by the rākṣasas]; bahu-bāndhavā = [even though] she had many relatives.
Separated from Me, the girl would certainly have become food for the rākṣasas, like the woman eaten [by the rākṣasas] after her co-travelers abandoned her, [even though] she had many relatives.1
1 Her relatives were meant to protect her. Technical note: rakṣasāṁ bhakṣaṇāya bālā sītā mayā virahitā. ata eva bahu-bāndhavā sārthena pathika-saṅghena parityaktā strīva bhakṣitā. rākṣasair iti śeṣaḥ.
