Chapter 64: Rāma Discovers Some Clues About Sītā’s Whereabouts

रथाक्षमात्रा विशिखास्तपनीयविभूषणाः।
कस्येमेऽभिहता बाणाः प्रकीर्णा घोरकर्मणः॥
rathākṣa-mātrā viśikhās tapanīya-vibhūṣaṇāḥ
kasyeme ’bhihatā bāṇāḥ prakīrṇā ghora-karmaṇaḥ
ratha-akṣa-mātrāḥ = [and] as long as a chariot’s axle; viśikhāḥ = they are [now] devoid of their arrowheads; tapanīya-vibhūṣaṇāḥ = they are gold-ornamented; kasya = whose; ime = are these; abhihatāḥ = broken; bāṇāḥ = arrows; prakīrṇāḥ = and scattered here and there; ghora-karmaṇaḥ = [capable] of terrible action.
Whose are these arrows? They are gold-ornamented, [capable of] terrible action [and] as long as a chariot’s axle. They are [now] devoid of their arrowheads, broken and scattered here and there.
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: vigata-phala-bhāgā iti vā.
Viśikhāḥ also indicates that these arrows didn’t successfully reach their targets.1
