तप्यमानं तथा रामं सीताहरणकर्शितम्।
लोकानामभवे युक्तं संवर्तकमिवानलम्॥
वीक्षमाणं धनुः सज्यं निःश्वसन्तं पुनः पुनः।
दग्धुकामं जगत्सर्वं युगान्ते तु यथा हरम्॥
अदृष्टपूर्वं सङ्क्रुद्धं दृष्ट्वा रामं तु लक्ष्मणः।
अब्रवीत्प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं मुखेन परिशुष्यता॥
tapyamānaṁ tathā rāmaṁ sītā-haraṇa-karśitam
lokānām abhave yuktaṁ saṁvartakam ivānalam
vīkṣamāṇaṁ dhanuḥ sajyaṁ niḥśvasantaṁ punaḥ punaḥ
dagdhu-kāmaṁ jagat sarvaṁ yugānte tu yathā haram
adṛṣṭa-pūrvaṁ saṅkruddhaṁ dṛṣṭvā rāmaṁ tu lakṣmaṇaḥ
abravīt prāñjalir vākyaṁ mukhena pariśuṣyatā
tapyamānam = was burning in anger; tathā = thus; rāmam = Śrī Rāma; sītā-haraṇa-karśitam = emaciated by the abduction of Sītā-devī; lokānām = the worlds; abhave = to annihilate; yuktam = He prepared; saṁvartakam = of dissolution; iva = like; analam = the fire; vīkṣamāṇam = and He looked at it; dhanuḥ = His bow; sajyam = was ready; niḥśvasantam = while sighing; punaḥ punaḥ = repeatedly; dagdhu-kāmam = He wanted to burn up; jagat = universe; sarvam = the entire; yuga-ante tu = at the end of the yuga; yathā = like; haram = Lord Hara; adṛṣṭa-pūrvam = unprecedented; saṅkruddham = in a state of fury; dṛṣṭvā = upon seeing; rāmam tu = Rāma; lakṣmaṇaḥ = Lakṣmaṇa’s; abravīt = and spoke; prāñjaliḥ = while He joined His palms in supplication; vākyam = the [following] words; mukhena = face; pariśuṣyatā = started to dry up.
Emaciated by the abduction of Sītā-devī, Śrī Rāma was thus burning in anger. Like the fire of dissolution, He prepared to annihilate the worlds. His bow was ready and He looked at it. While repeatedly sighing, He wanted to burn up the entire universe like Lord Hara at the end of the yuga.1 Upon seeing Rāma in a state of unprecedented fury, Lakṣmaṇa’s face started to dry up while He joined His palms in supplication and spoke the [following] words.2
In this chapter, it is described that Lakṣmaṇa consoled Rāmacandra when the latter was overcome by anger and wanted to destroy the universe.
The statements that Lord Rāma had made about destroying the universe were caused by His anger; they were not premeditated. It is implied here that Lakṣmaṇa’s face started to dry up in fear that the worlds would be destroyed.
