Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 66: Lakṣmaṇa Pacifies Śrī Rāma
Text 3.66.12
सुमहान्त्यपि भूतानि देवाश्च पुरुषर्षभ।
न दैवस्य प्रमुञ्चन्ति सर्वभूतादिदेहिनः॥
sumahānty api bhūtāni devāś ca puruṣa-rṣabha
na daivasya pramuñcanti sarva-bhūtādi-dehinaḥ
sumahānti = very great; api = even; bhūtāni = beings; devāḥ = devas; ca = and; puruṣa-ṛṣabha = O prince; na = never; daivasya = of providence; pramuñcanti = can avoid being under the control; sarva-bhūta-ādi-dehinaḥ = the innermost controller of all embodied creatures.
O prince, even very great beings and devas can never avoid being under the control of providence, the innermost controller of all embodied creatures.1
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: sarva-bhūtādi-dehinaḥ ādi-deho’syāstīti tathā sarva-bhūtāntaryāmiṇaḥ ity arthaḥ.
Even great beings such as Māndhātā and Nala cannot avoid being under the control of providence, that is, the Supreme Soul. In other words, none of them can trangress His will.
Lakṣmaṇa then concludes with the next verse.
