Chapter 67: Rāma Meets Jaṭāyu
Text 3.67.14
तं दीनं दीनया वाचा सफेनं रुधिरं वमन्।
अभ्यभाषत पक्षी तु रामं दशरथात्मजम्॥
taṁ dīnaṁ dīnayā vācā saphenaṁ rudhiraṁ vaman
abhyabhāṣata pakṣī tu rāmaṁ daśarathātmajam
tam = the; dīnam = to miserable; dīnayā = of misery; vācā = with words; saphenam = foamy; rudhiram = blood; vaman = while vomiting; abhyabhāṣata = spoke; pakṣī = the bird; tu = but; rāmam = Rāma; daśaratha-ātmajam = son of Daśaratha.
But while vomiting foamy blood, the bird spoke words of misery to the miserable Rāma, the son of Daśaratha.
1 The bird Jaṭāyu was a friend of Śrī Rāma’s father. This is how they are related.
“The son of Daśaratha” indicates that [the bird] was related [to Śrī Rāma].1
