Chapter 68: Jaṭāyu’s Liberation
Text 3.68.22
पश्य लक्ष्मण गृध्रोऽयमुपकारी हतश्च मे।
सीतामभ्यवपन्नो वै रावणेन बलीयसा॥
paśya lakṣmaṇa gṛdhro ’yam upakārī hataś ca me
sītām abhyavapanno vai rāvaṇena balīyasā
paśya = look; lakṣmaṇa = Lakṣmaṇa; gṛdhraḥ = vulture; ayam = this; upakārī = as well-wisher; hataḥ = was killed; ca = and; me = My; sītām = to [rescue] Sītā; abhyavapannaḥ vai = went down; rāvaṇena = Rāvaṇa; balīyasā = by the strong.
Lakṣmaṇa, look! As My well-wisher, this vulture went down to [rescue] Sītā and was killed by the strong Rāvaṇa!
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: paśyeti anena mokṣa-pradānocitaṁ tadīya-sukṛta-viśeṣaṁ darśayati.
Here Lord Rāma points out the good acts of Jaṭāyu which have rendered him fit for liberation from material existence.1
