Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 68: Jaṭāyu’s Liberation
Text 3.68.23

गृध्रराज्यं परित्यज्य पितृपैतामहं महत्।
मम हेतोरयं प्राणान्मुमोच पतगेश्वरः॥

gṛdhra-rājyaṁ parityajya pitṛ-paitāmahaṁ mahat
mama hetor ayaṁ prāṇān mumoca patageśvaraḥ

gṛdhra-rājyam = kingdom of vultures; parityajya = abandoned; pitṛ-paitāmaham = which he inherited from his father and grandfather; mahat = the great; mama hetoḥ = for My sake; ayam = this; prāṇān = his life; mumoca = and he gave up; pataga-īśvaraḥ = lord of the birds.

This lord of the birds abandoned the great kingdom of vultures which he inherited from his father and grandfather, and for My sake he gave up his life!

[“For My sake he gave up his life] implies the following thought of Lord Rāmacandra: “After the death of Our father, I considered that I will be happy by taking shelter of those who supported him. [But], like Our father, this [vulture] has given up his life for My sake!”
