Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 71: Kabandha’s Past Life
Text 3.71.30
किन्तु यावन्न यात्यस्तं सविता श्रान्तवाहनः।
तावन्मामवटे क्षिप्त्वा दह राम यथाविधि॥
kintu yāvan na yāty astaṁ savitā śrānta-vāhanaḥ
tāvan mām avaṭe kṣiptvā daha rāma yathā-vidhi
kintu = but; yāvat na yāti astam = before sets; savitā = the sun; śrānta-vāhanaḥ = [at the time] his horses become exhausted; tāvat mām = me; avaṭe = into a pit; kṣiptvā = throw; daha = and burn [me]; rāma = O Rāma; yathā-vidhi = according to the scriptural injunctions.
But, O Rāma, throw me into a pit and burn [me] according to the scriptural injunctions before the sun sets [at the time] his horses become exhausted.
“According to the scriptural injunctions” indicates that Rāma should burn Kabandha’s body fully.
