Chapter 1: Contents of the Rāmāyaṇa Summarized
Text 1.1.92

अश्वमेधशतैरिष्ट्वा तथा बहुसुवर्णकैः।
गवां कोट्ययुतं दत्त्वा ब्रह्मलोकं प्रयास्यति।
असङ्ख्येयं धनं दत्त्वा ब्राह्मणेभ्यो महायशाः॥

aśvamedha-śatair iṣṭvā tathā bahu-suvarṇakaiḥ
gavāṁ koṭy-ayutaṁ dattvā brahma-lokaṁ prayāsyati
asaṅkhyeyaṁ dhanaṁ dattvā brāhmaṇebhyo mahā-yaśāḥ

aśvamedha-śataiḥ = several Aśvamedha; iṣṭvā = will perform; tathā = and; bahu-suvarṇakaiḥ = Bahu-suvarṇaka sacrifices; gavām = cows; koṭy-ayutam = 100,000,000,000; dattvā = give in charity; brahma-lokam = to the spiritual world; prayāsyati = depart; asaṅkhyeyam = immeasurable; dhanam dattvā = wealth; brāhmaṇebhyaḥ = to the brāhmaṇas; mahā-yaśāḥ = Rāma of great fame.

Rāma of great fame will perform several Aśvamedha and Bahu-suvarṇaka sacrifices, give in charity 100,000,000,000 cows and immeasurable wealth to the brāhmaṇas and depart to the spiritual world.

Rāma had attained great fame because of maintaining His citizens. Thus it is indicated that all the ingredients [in His kingdom] were pure [and so fit for sacrifice].

He performed several sacrifices:

dasa-varṣa-sahasrāṇi vājimedham upākarot

“Rāma performed Aśvamedha sacrifices for 10,000 years.” (Rāmāyaṇa 7.99.9)

Bahu-suvarṇaka sacrifices are those in which a large amount of gold is used as ingredient for the sacrifice. These sacrifices that He had conducted later indicate that He had also conducted sacrifices earlier—sacrifices like the Agniṣṭoma.

Brahma-lokam indicates that Lord Rāma will depart to the world of the Supreme Brahman that is Himself, that is, He will depart to His supreme abode, the spiritual world [of Vaikuṇṭha].

Rāma of great fame is an indication that He will give up Sītā-devī simply upon hearing some criticism [from the public]. Because it is stated that He will perform Aśvamedha sacrifices for 10,000 years and that He will perform [the regular] sacrifices without Sītā-devī, it is understood that Sītā would be separated from Him shortly after His coronation. He would start the performance of the Aśvamedha sacrifice on the pretext of destroying the sins involved in killing Rāvaṇa and He would do so without delay. Sītā would be separated from Him before He begins the Aśvamedha sacrifice because in the first Aśvamedha sacrifice, He would use a [golden] image of her. That this is an authoritative method of performing the sacrifice would be described later.

Having described how Rāma carries out dharma, the sage describes in the next verse how He causes others to carry out dharma.
