Canto 1 - Boyhood
Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 10: Ṛśyaśṛṅga Comes to Romapada’s kingdom
Text 1.10.19

अस्माकमपि मुख्यानि फलानीमानि वै द्विज।
गृहाण प्रति भद्रं ते भक्षयस्व च माचिरम्॥

asmākam api mukhyāni phalānīmāni vai dvija
gṛhāṇa prati bhadraṁ te bhakṣayasva ca māciram

asmākam api = from us; mukhyāni = excellent; phalāni = fruits; imāni vai = these; dvija = O twice born; gṛhāṇa = please accept; prati = in return; bhadram = auspiciousness; te = unto you; bhakṣayasva ca = please eat them; ciram = without delay.

O twice born, please accept these excellent fruits from us in return. Auspiciousness unto you! Please eat them without delay.

Gṛhāṇa prati is the same as pratigṛhāṇa (“accept in return”). In the Śruti, such verbal prefixes even occur after the verb [1]. [And there is a saying,] “The historical narrations are like the Śruti [2].” [Therefore, we find such usage here.]

[1] chandasi pare ’pi (Aṣṭādhyāyī 1.4.81).

[2] chandovat purāṇāni bhavanti.
