Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 14: The Aśvamedha Sacrifice
Text 1.14.13
वृद्धाश्च व्याधिताश्चैव स्त्रियो बालास्तथैव च।
अनिशं भुञ्जमानानां न तृप्तिरुपलभ्यते॥
vṛddhāś ca vyādhitāś caiva striyo bālās tathaiva ca
aniśaṁ bhuñjamānānāṁ na tṛptir upalabhyate
vṛddhāḥ ca = so did the elderly; vyādhitāḥ ca eva = the diseased; striyaḥ = women; bālāḥ tathā eva ca = and children; aniśam = daily; bhuñjamānānām = though they ate; na = not; tṛptiḥ upalabhyate = the sponsor was satiated.
So did the elderly, the diseased, women and children. Though they ate daily, the sponsor was not satiated.
The second half of this verse can also mean: Because of the great taste, even after eating, the eaters developed the desire to eat again.
